In 2002, a goat herder in the dusty rural bush of Kenya received a rare invitation to attend one of the country's few universities. While Duncan Ziro was fortunate to receive such an invitation, the opportunity was completely out of reach for a young man who comes from an area where many are forced to survive on less than a dollar a day.
Duncan’s family lived in a small mud hut far from town. Although his father was a school teacher, the family wasn’t any better off than others in their small community. Each day, Duncan would get up before dawn to begin his daily routine, just like the other young men in the area. Their family was poor, living off the land for their basic needs. Duncan’s responsibility was to care for the small herd of goats his father owned.
When Duncan received his invitation letter, there was much rejoicing in the village. No one in the family or the surrounding community had ever had such an opportunity. But the costs of a college education soon dampened the mood. The chances of Duncan ever finding the funding necessary to attend university were slim to none.
This is INTERCEDE’s story too. It is our desire to intervene and to help –to intercede – on behalf of young people like Duncan Wanje Ziro.
Duncan’s story is one of success because INTERCEDE joined hands with well-wishers around the globe to help Duncan achieve his wildest dreams and to receive a university degree.
