Below is a list of some immediate, specific needs.

Famine!

According to the Daily Nation, the government of Kenya is struggling to deal with an estimated 10 million famine stricken families.  Some of the worst hit areas are on the coast and include families in Malindi and Kilifi Districts.  Duncan Ziro is coordinating efforts in both districts and his hope and prayer is that he can reach as many families as possible.

INTERCEDE's long range goal is to overcome this type of disaster.  By educating and equipping Kenyans, we can help them to feed themselves for a lifetime rather merely help them when things are at an extreme like this.  "Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime."

Please donate to relieve the current suffering, then consider donating regularly to solve the problem.

Immediate need: donations to buy maize and beans for suffering families and seed so that they may plant crops during the next rain.

Duncan Wanje Ziro

Meet Duncan.  He is a good friend and has proven himself to be committed, faithful, and trustworthy.  In 2002, this goat herder in the dusty rural bush of Kenya received a rare invitation to attend one of the country's few universities.  When Duncan received his letter, there was much rejoicing in the village.  No one in the family or the surrounding community had ever had such an opportunity.  But the costs of a college education soon dampened the mood.  While Duncan was fortunate to receive such an invitation, the prospect was completely out of reach for a young man who comes from an area where many are forced to survive on less than a dollar a day.

Through INTERCEDE, Duncan was able to achieve his wildest dreams and receive a BA in Bible and Community Development.  Today, Duncan works as INTERCEDE’s Field Administrator providing grass-roots education in his home area.

Immediate need: $6,600 for the whole of 2009.

Fredrick Charo Kaingu

Fredrick serves as the INTERCEDE Field Coordinator in Kaloleni, Kenya.  He works to oversee the various programs and projects connected with the MCRC office in the Kaloleni area, meeting with various community and church leaders to organize outreach and growth projects.  He has regular classes targeting the youth in the area who, without his encouragement and training, have little hope for a successful future.  Fredrick was also one of the first to receive assistance from INTERCEDE and graduated with a diploma from Nairobi Great Commission School in 2000.

Immediate need: $6,600 for the whole of 2009.

John Kahindi Chengo

A note from John:

My name is John Kahindi Chengo.  I am a Giryama in tribe and I live on the coast of Kenya.  I was born in 1980 at Malindi District Hospital.  I am the first born of five, with two brothers and two sisters.  I went through 8 years in primary school in my home village of Msabaha and attended secondary school from 1996 to 1999.

My desire was to get a Degree in Biomedical Sciences after secondary school, but this has been impossible due to the fact that I do not have the financial means to pay the school fees.  A degree was too expensive so I took a one year certificate in 2001-2002.  After this, I thought that I would join for the degree, but still finances were a problem.  So I took a diploma of the same course from 2002-2005.

After 2005, I also thought of immediately starting the degree course but up to now, am still waiting for God to help me get the fees.  In 2000, I enrolled in a Bible school at Uzima Christian Training Center in Malindi, and I still take the Bible classes up to this day because I also want to be a Christian doctor.  I have the desire of reaching people, sharing with them how to be spiritually and physically healthy.  To achieve this, I am equipping myself with God's knowledge and with medical knowledge.

God is faithful enough and I believe that he will help me get the fees and the proper knowledge.

We would like to raise the money needed to help John get his degree. What a blessing he could be to the ministry on the coast!  Imagine, a Giryama Christian doctor serving with us fulltime, among the poorest of the poor in East Africa! He would be the first doctor, and a Christian at that, willing to give his time in service to God’s people on the coast of Kenya! His father has agreed to pay for all other expenses, so this is a partnership; we’re not footing the whole bill.

Immediate need: $3,500 for John's second year at college.  ($3,500 has been raised for his first year.)

Below is a list of some of the ongoing and long-term needs.

Christian Training Program

This program is the centerpiece of all our programs.  We are a discipling organization that believes firmly in the overall development and wellbeing of the whole person.  Discipling encompasses three components:

  • Evangelism - reaching out to those who do not have a relationship with Jesus
  • Education - teaching and training the young Christian for service in their church and communities
  • Empowerment - giving the necessary tools, equipment and experience to accomplish great things for the local church and community

We believe in reaching out to a lost world, sharing the good news of Jesus with others.  We encourage those who partner with us to share their faith boldly and with conviction.  (This is the "evangelism" component.)  But sharing the love of Jesus is not enough.  We are interested in training and growing the young Christian in their new relationship with Jesus.  (This is the "education" component.)  During this education stage, the young Christian may attend Bible school or university for further training.  But in addition to this, an internship is expected after the formal education is completed.  It is during the internship that the person walks with mature Christian leaders, allowing them to exercise their classroom knowledge in real-life situations.  They will experience first-hand the challenges of grass-roots education and evangelizing the lost.  And lastly, we believe that after the person is taught and trained, they need to be encouraged and given the tools necessary to then share their faith with others in the same way it was shared with them.  (This is the "empowerment" component.)

As Christians, we are committed to making the world we live in a better place.

Immediate need: $41,360  ($10,500 has already been raised.)

Resource Center (MCRC) Continued Expansion and Community Programs

1 All of the people serving with us and the various ministries that we have listed here must have a place to operate.  Almost all of our programs occur locally, village to village, or at the local MCRC office.  These are basic buildings that offer little more than shelter from the weather.  Yet we have seen the blessing these basic structures have been for our partners and church and community leaders.  (We began with the small mud hut shown at the top left and now have a more permanent structure shown below.)  The building pictured to the right is located in Kaloleni and is nearing completion.  But we have many plans for expansion on this 3 1/2 acres, including an agricultural demonstration plot (which has begun), a water well for the community, a community library (books are being collected now), adult literacy classes, and much more.  Some of the programs currently offered at the MCRC locations include:

  • Children's Bible Classes
1

  • Weekly adult Bible study

  • Youth seminars and training

  • Regular leader's prayer meetings and seminars

In addition to this, the Kilifi branch of MCRC has been renting a small space for years and is in desperate need of more room.  There is need to purchase and build a similar, simple structure for the continued outreach and development of the people in the Kilifi area.

A report published on November 1, 2005, in two of the Kenyan national papers, The Daily Nation and The Standard, stated clearly that the poorest constituencies in Kenya are located in Kilifi District where INTERCEDE has focused most of its efforts the last several years.

The United Nations report State of the World Population 2005 had this to say concerning education and the young person:
"Education for all is central to any society.  Yet, too many children living in poverty, especially girls, are  still missing out.  Despite evidence that clearly shows that the education of girls, and – in particular – secondary education, is critical to poverty reduction and development, the world has failed."

In Kilifi District alone, the literacy rate is only 45%.  We need to educate the next generation and encourage spiritual, economic, and community growth and development.  INTERCEDE is taking a holistic approach to development of the whole person, and we believe a crucial step in this is simply teaching people to read.

  • Did you know that the population of the African continent is estimated to be 900 million?
  • Did you know that of that 900 million, a staggering 71% is under the age of 25?
  • According to the UN, 50% of the world's population in under 25.
1
Today's generation of young people is the largest in human history.  Through the Maarifa Christian Resource Centers (MCRC) in Kilifi and Kaloleni, INTERCEDE is reaching out to these 640 million youth on the continent.  We are making a difference, giving them hope and opportunity for tomorrow.  But our youth programs cannot continue without the generous contributions of people like you.  We have plans to open a tailoring and computer school in the next year and want to continue the quarterly youth meetings, encouraging young people to take the future into their own hands.

Immediate need: $90,000 for construction of facilities in Kilifi, youth programs, adult literacy program, women and family education, and farming and livestock education in both Kilifi and Kaloleni.
